Cork Examiner, February 1, 1868

Allen’s Father – Mr. Thomas Allen, father of William Philip Allen, and for years bridewell-keeper at Bandon, has been removed to the County Gaol of this city, where he will henceforth fill the position of warder. This change, though entailing more work, will also involve an increase of salary.

Dublin Evening Mail, February 2, 1868

Allen’s Father. We have received information, which we have reason to believe reliable, that the father of young William Philip Allen, executed at Manchester, last November – Mr. Thomas Allen, who has been for years the bridewell-keeper in Bandon – is about to be, or perhaps has been, removed to Cork County Jail, and promoted to the post of warder. Mr. Allen is a man of advanced age, in the declining years of life, and the duties of a warder in the jails of this part of the country involve work trying to any health, and perhaps it may turn out after all that Mr. Allen’s failing constitution will not be restored by the change. We believe that he has gained pecuniarily by the change. – Cork Herald.
